Black Saturday
Stay or Go? When the inhabitants of bushfire areas are threatened by fire, they have a choice to stay or go: sometimes our environment requires endurance, and sometimes to leave our home is a tragic but necessary event. Write about how you would feel in a similar situation.
ISLAND
This is a picture of the area of Nova Scotia featured in Island - consider the following questions:
How does the harshness of the landscape affect the inhabitants of the Island?
Under what circumstances is it possible for the same landscape to be seen as both beautiful and dangerous?
Think of an instance in which two different people might have an opposing response to the same landscape.

Salvador Dali
We recently visited the Dali exhibition at the NGV. We learned that Dali was a very gifted painter and an eccentric man with his own particular style and view of the world. How did you respond to his work? Which painting affected you most? Consider the idea that Dali has found a way to express the inner most workings of his mind - what circumstances have contributed to creating this mind? Why are his ideas expressed in the context of a landscape?

Art after disaster
This is a painting of the aftermath of the Black Saturday fires. These fires devastated people's homes and the surrounding areas. How might residents of these areas have been affected? Why do we feel the need to recreate images of disaster through art, as this painter has done?
